FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  JUNE 2, 2021

HONORING WOMEN VETERANS

RED, WHITE & BLUE FUN RUN & 5k

The June 12th fundraiser celebrates women veterans while helping them thrive in civilian life

Sacramento, CA—Saturday, June 12th marks Women Veterans Day in many states. To commemorate this important date, Women Veterans Alliance and Women Veterans Giving are holding one of their annual fundraisers: The Red, White & Blue Fun Run.

The excitement begins on Saturday morning with the third annual Women Veterans Red, White & Blue Fun Run & 5k at Orangevale Community Park. Open to participants of all ages, the Fun Run honors America’s women veterans while raising funds to empower them as they transition to civilian life, attend educational programs, launch their careers, and expand their businesses.

Registration to run, walk, or ride opens at 8:00 am, while the run begins at 9:00 am. After-run activities, including awards, will continue in the park until 11:00 am. Visit the official website for more information, to register in advance, or to purchase an exclusive 2021 Women Veterans Day t-shirt.  Virtual participation and team fundraising is also an option.

Recognized on June 12, Women Veterans Day marks the anniversary of the Women’s Armed Services Act. Established in 1948, the law made it possible for women to serve as regular members of all wings of the US military. Ahead of that, women could only serve during wartime, unless they were nurses. Currently, Women Veterans Day is not recognized as a national holiday and only a dozen states commemorate the date.

In 2017, Texas was the first state to enact it into law as an official holiday. But things are slowly beginning to change: just last week, Tennessee passed House Bill 504, which recognizes Women Veterans Day as a state holiday. Veterans, active members of the military, and civilians are all encouraged to reach out to their state’s Veterans Administration to urge lawmakers to recognize this important date.
