What inspired you to become a supporter of women veterans and how do you believe your support makes a difference in their lives.
The initial inspiration to the military community was a spiritual experience in 2005 which changed the trajectory of my life and contained the assignment to provide resources for spiritual support to the military and veteran communities. The move to focus on women veterans came in large part through meeting WVA Founder, Melissa Washington in early 2015 and being introduced to the women veteran community through involvement with Women Veterans Alliance. Resolve strengthened as I learned that women veterans often go unrecognized and unacknowledged, and as is reflected in other parts of society, they do not have the same level of response to their expressed needs or resources dedicated to their well-being as their male counterparts.
Can you share a story or experience where you felt particularly proud of the impact your support has had on the woman veteran’s community?
Both my work creating and making available soul care resources as well as the free financial coaching which I have been able to provide over the years, have been particularly gratifying. I am also so pleased at having conducted doctoral research with women veterans which has resulted in an evidenced-based spiritual practice shown to increase resilience and thus, well-being. Specifically, the daily listening to various albums and playlists of song prayers which I have created over the past twenty years. It is the results of this research alongside the creation of over 250 song prayers made available on 25+ albums through various streaming services, YouTube and on CD, which has the potential to have the farthest reaching healing impact on the veteran community both now and beyond my lifetime. Women veterans can read about the research study in my book, Soul Care-Song Prayers: A Spiritual Practice Toward Resilience and Well-Being.
What message would you like to share with other patriotic supporters about the importance of honoring and uplifting women veterans?
Women veterans are the most amazing women. They are integral to the military and veteran communities. Let’s be sure to become increasingly aware of their unique challenges and find ways to come alongside in ways which honor, support, encourage and celebrate women veterans as individuals and as a community.
