Supporting Our Veterans: Low-Cost & No-Cost Home Repair Assistance

 Image Name

Homeownership is a source of pride, stability, and independence. But for many veterans, especially those living on a fixed income, maintaining a home can pose considerable challenges. That’s why initiatives like the Veteran Repairs Program offered by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento play a vital role in ensuring veterans can keep their homes safe, functional, and beautiful.

What the Veteran Repairs Program Offers

Habitat Greater Sacramento provides a range of repair and maintenance services to qualified veteran homeowners in Sacramento County and Yolo County. Some of the key services include:

  • Exterior repairs like dry rot treatment and painting

  • Critical system upgrades (roof, HVAC, water heater)

  • Energy-efficiency improvements

  • Landscaping, yard maintenance, and drought-tolerant yard installations

  • General home upkeep tasks (for example, gutter cleaning or tree limb trimming)

  • Fencing “good-neighbor” projects

The idea is to help veterans address both cosmetic and urgent repairs that they might otherwise struggle to afford or manage.

Who Qualifies?

To participate in the program, applicants must:

  1. Be a veteran or have served active military duty (with proof, such as DD 214).

  2. Own and live in their home in Sacramento or Yolo counties.

  3. Be on a low or fixed income.

  4. Demonstrate need for repair services (from minor maintenance to major systems).

If you or someone you know fits these criteria, you can sign up to be placed on the program’s inquiry list for future application opportunities.

Beyond Repairs: Community and Sponsorship

  • Habitat Greater Sacramento is open to community project ideas relating to veterans. If you have suggestions or partnerships to propose, there is a form you can fill out.

  • If you are interested in supporting veteran repair work, you can sponsor a veteran project by contacting their representative, Kathy Severson (KSeverson@HabitatGreaterSac.org).

Why It Matters

For many veterans, transitioning from service to civilian life includes managing physical, mental, and financial hurdles. A stable home environment is a foundation for health, dignity, and continued independence. By removing the burden of costly repairs, this program helps veterans focus on what they need most: peace of mind and security.
