Representing the past, Corporal Morgan, Women Veterans Monument, Treadway Memorial Park
The Women Veterans Monument in West Liberty, Kentucky, stands as a solemn tribute to the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of women who have served in the military. Dedicated to honoring their invaluable contributions throughout history, the monument symbolizes their strength and dedication in defending our nation. Nestled amidst the serene landscapes of West Liberty, it serves as a poignant reminder of the often overlooked but vital role that women have played in safeguarding our freedoms.
This figure represents the PAST. She was named Corporal Morgan, in honor of all Morgan County’s Veterans. She represents six-hundred women that were first stationed overseas during WWII. They served as clerks, stenographers, telephone operators and assisted in the planning of D-day.
She wears the Pallas Atena on her left breast pocket which is the symbol of the Women’s Army Corps. Corporal Morgan is displaying with her left hand one of the most famous images of WWII recruitment. Her left hand is configured like the hand of Uncle Sam in the famous poster, “I want you.” In this depiction, she is directing activities and tasks to those working in support of the troops and their needs.

This figure represents the PRESENT. She is dressed in field uniform and combat gear. She is expected to serve her nation and be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for her unit and her country.
She is carrying new gear mixed with older gear. She does not represent any specific branch of the armed forces. She has been trained and can protect herself and her fellow soldiers during her mission. More importantly, she represents the evolution of women through training, combat experience, education, and the development self-confidence in all roles of support for the armed forces including the hazards of combat and other dangerous environments.

This figure represents the FUTURE in a poetic form. She is a navy officer. She is an inspirational figure for all women military and non-military. She has and will experience many things in her lifetime and proudly salutes the flag. She has fought and served with dignity and purpose to ensure that freedom is protected. She wears all medals proudly and has achieved the highest rank possible. She encourages the nation to take care of its veterans and to honor them for their sacrifices.
She reminds us that she is part of an unbroken line of veterans that stretches back to the birth of our nation. She encourages women to experience military service and careers. She represents women that will achieve the highest ranks possible, a chairperson of the Joint Chief of Staff, or perhaps the commander in chief of all the armed forces. Lastly, she is telling us that serving her nation is the most important role of who she is…forever.
